TREATMENT OVERVIEW

Understanding Cataract & Cataract Surgery

What is a Cataract?

A cataract is the clouding of the eye's natural lens — the transparent structure sitting behind the iris. When proteins in the lens break down with age, they clump together and turn the lens cloudy, blocking light from reaching the retina clearly. The result: blurred vision, dull colours, glare at night, and eventually near-blindness if untreated.

How Cataract Surgery Works

We perform Phacoemulsification (Phaco) — the globally recognised gold standard. Numbing eye drops are applied with no needles. A tiny 2–2.8 mm micro-incision is made at the edge of the cornea. Ultrasound energy gently breaks the cloudy lens into fragments, which are suctioned away. Your premium IOL is folded, inserted through the same incision, and unfolds into perfect position. The incision seals itself — no stitches required.

Signs You May Need Cataract Surgery

Blurry or Cloudy Vision

Objects look hazy or as if you are looking through a fogged-up window — even with glasses on.

Most common early sign of cataract

Glare & Halos at Night

Oncoming headlights create painful glare or bright rings. Night driving becomes difficult and unsafe.

Common with advancing cataract

Frequent Prescription Changes

Your glasses or contact prescription keeps shifting — a classic sign the lens inside your eye is changing.

Evaluate if prescription changes repeatedly

Faded or Yellowed Colours

The world looks washed out or has a yellow-brown tint. Colours that once looked vibrant now appear dull.

Sign of progressive lens clouding

Sensitivity to Bright Light

Indoor or outdoor lighting feels unusually harsh or uncomfortable.

Light sensitivity can increase as the cataract worsens

Double Vision in One Eye

Seeing a ghost image or double vision even when one eye is closed.

Early cataract symptom that needs prompt evaluation

Expected Visual Outcomes

Cataract surgery is one of the safest surgical procedures in medicine, with a global success rate exceeding 98%. At Netram Eye Foundation, our success rate is 98.5% across 10,000+ surgeries performed over 19 years. Most patients notice improved vision within hours of surgery. The IOL implanted is permanent — true cataracts do not recur once the natural lens is removed.

OUR APPROACH

Micro-Incision Phacoemulsification — The Gold Standard

We perform the most advanced form of cataract surgery available — microincision phacoemulsification with premium IOL implantation. Every step is designed for maximum precision, minimal trauma, and the fastest possible recovery.

  • Zero-Stitch Micro-Incision: A tiny 2–2.8 mm self-sealing incision — no stitches, no blade, no patches.

  • Ultrasound Phacoemulsification: Controlled ultrasound energy breaks the cloudy lens gently and precisely.

  • Premium IOL Portfolio — 17 Options: From J&J PureSee (CRV) to Hoya Trifocal and Eyhance EDOF.

  • Toric IOL Option: Astigmatism correction added to any package — sharp distance vision without glasses.

  • Femtosecond Laser Add-On (FLACS): Computer-guided laser precision for complex or dense cataracts.

  • Topical Anaesthesia — No Injections: Numbing eye drops only — no needles, no general anaesthesia.

  • Day-Care Procedure: You go home the same day. Most patients are cleared for daily activities next morning.

ALL YOUR QUESTIONS ANSWERED

Frequently Asked Questions About Cataract Surgery

What is cataract surgery and is it safe?

Cataract surgery is the removal of the eye's clouded natural lens and its replacement with a clear artificial intraocular lens (IOL). It is one of the safest surgical procedures in medicine, with a global success rate exceeding 98%. At Netram Eye Foundation, our success rate is 98.5% across 10,000+ surgeries performed over 19 years.

How do I know if I need cataract surgery?

Common signs include:

  • Blurry or hazy vision, even with glasses
  • Glare and halos at night — difficulty driving
  • Frequent prescription changes
  • Difficulty reading in dim light
  • Faded or yellowed colours

If these symptoms are interfering with daily life, it is time for an evaluation. Book a free consultation at our Greater Kailash II clinic — we will tell you honestly whether you need surgery now, or whether you can wait.

Which IOL is best for cataract surgery in India?

The best IOL depends on your vision goals, lifestyle, and budget. At Netram, we offer 17 IOL options across every category:

  • Glasses-free vision at all distances: J&J PureSee (CRV) or Hoya Geometry Trifocal
  • Distance + intermediate with minimal glare: J&J Eyhance or Hoya Impress EDOF
  • Sharp distance vision on a moderate budget: Hoya Vivinex, Tecnis 1 (J&J), or Acrivision UK

If you have astigmatism, any package can be upgraded with a Toric IOL for just ₹15,000 more. Dr. Anchal Gupta personally guides you to the right lens — never a one-size-fits-all recommendation.

Can cataract surgery be done on both eyes at the same time?

Most surgeons, including our team at Netram, prefer to operate on each eye separately — typically one to two weeks apart. This allows us to confirm visual outcomes from the first eye before proceeding, and ensures safety if any variation in healing occurs. In select cases, bilateral surgery on the same day may be considered.

Is the procedure painful? What anaesthesia is used?

Cataract surgery is essentially painless. We use topical anaesthetic drops — no needles, no injections around the eye, no general anaesthesia for most patients. You remain awake throughout but feel nothing. Some patients report a very mild pressure sensation lasting a few seconds — that is the full extent of it.

How long does cataract surgery take and when can I go home?

The surgical procedure itself takes just 10–15 minutes per eye. With pre-operative preparation and post-operative observation, you will be at the clinic for approximately 2–3 hours in total. You go home the same day.

What tests decide if I am eligible for cataract surgery?

Before surgery we perform:

  1. Slit-lamp examination
  2. A-Scan Biometry for IOL power calculation
  3. Corneal Topography
  4. Intraocular Pressure check
  5. Retinal assessment (fundus evaluation)
  6. General health tests — blood pressure, blood sugar, ECG

These tests ensure both the safety of surgery and the precise selection of your IOL power.

What is the cost of cataract surgery at Netram Eye Foundation?

The cost depends primarily on the IOL you choose. With a basic monofocal lens it starts at approximately ₹15,000–₹25,000 per eye. Premium IOLs such as Trifocal, EDOF, and CRV options range from ₹45,000 to ₹1,15,000 per eye. We offer cashless insurance claims, EMI options, and charitable surgery for patients in need.

Can cataracts come back after surgery?

The IOL implanted during cataract surgery is permanent — true cataracts do not recur once the natural lens is removed. However, some patients develop Posterior Capsule Opacification (PCO) — a clouding of the thin membrane behind the IOL — months to years later. This is easily treated with a quick, painless 5-minute laser procedure called YAG Capsulotomy at Netram. It is not a recurrence of the cataract.

How is cataract surgery different from LASIK?

LASIK reshapes the cornea to correct refractive errors in a healthy eye and is suitable for patients under 45 with healthy lenses. Cataract surgery removes a cloudy natural lens and replaces it with an IOL — it treats a structural problem inside the eye. Patients with cataracts cannot have LASIK; cataract surgery is the appropriate treatment.
